Daily Prompt: Wall to Wall

rsz_11010.jpgWhat do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing? How do you choose what to display? What mood are you trying to create?

Home is a place that should reflect who we are, which to me means it’s not a sterile or static environment. Also different areas have different functions in my life, so no everything isn’t above the sofa. The kitchen has a calendar with food photos, and a cork/white board, where I leave notes for what I need in the way of household supplies, and food items. I am one of those that will use up the last of a spice such as galangal, and as I don’t use it every day, promptly forget about it, until I need it again. The cork section is where I pin my bills which I can’t pay online so they get paid. The dining area has a window on one side, and a blank wall area that extends to the kitchen. This blank area is for that perfect piece of artwork that will stimulate conversation, enhance the appetite, and add color, so it remains an unfinished project. Now off to the living room, where a framed print of the picture above, can be found. If it looks familiar, it is the basis for my banner here, and bonus points if you know where it was taken. Then that little corner which passes for my home office, has a large cork board on one wall, and above the desk is a standard letter sized frame. The photo or saying here changes on an irregular basis, and currently has the one shown below. It has held such classic sayings, as I work to live, not live to work, when I felt I needed to re-balance my life.

Dalai Lama Live now

The hallway has a collection of small photos, mainly of family, friends, and a few pictures of places where I have lived and traveled. The bathroom has nothing extraneous hanging on the walls, the less to clean the happier I am. My bedroom walls only have a little decoration on the wall behind my home shrine.

  1. My living room has a photo of my city and two photos taken of homeless people – all black and whites and professionally framed.

My bedroom has Madonna and child bunka art made by my mother and a colour photo of my city given to me when I did a presentation on an affordable housing building for the City of Calgary.

My kitchen has photos of family and friends on the shelf, fridge, cork board – everywhere.

My bathroom has a painting of a loon on bark framed professionally and made by a friend.

My spare room, previously my daughter’s room displays her art over the years.

  5. Your description very much resembles my own. Odd how living simply seems to result in something that resembles a monastery. But I would have it no other way.
