Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Facebook and content rights

Have you seen the new notice that people are posting on their Facebook page, about owning all he content. Well here’s something you might want to read. Thanks to PCWorld. As with anything posted online, I assume that keeping control will not be easy. If someone copies your work, then someone else copies it from them, and it keeps expanding, are you prepared to be fighting for the next 50 years or so? This is an issue that need international co-operation, as the current nation by nation approach has proven ineffective.

What is a family?

“A family is where minds come in contact with one another. If these minds love one another, the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden, but if these minds get out of harmony with one another, it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden.” The Buddha

This has to be the simplest definition of how to have a happy family. Love one another. No fancy way of dividing the housework, or disciplining the children. No rules about friends or what job you should have, just be in harmony through love. No formula about gathering assets or how to live. Just acceptance of each other as you all are.

So try the advice the Buddha gives, and just love your family today, with no preconceptions. Tomorrow repeat, until you have done this exercise for a month. Keep a diary over this month, record any negative thoughts you have about those you love. After a month, take a look at the trend towards negative thoughts. Is the trend increasing, staying about the same or decreasing? DO you find your connection to your family stronger than when you started? As usual these answers are for yourself, no sharing required.

Love is…

“Love feels no burden, thinks nothing of trouble, attempts what is above its strength, pleads no excuse of impossibility; for it thinks all things lawful for itself, and all things possible.” Thomas Kempis

When we love without reservation or expectation, we exhibit the best qualities of ourselves. We think nothing of the hardship that we might face to do something for the other being. We don’t think, but this could possibly cost me, my possessions, my job or my life. People have been recorded of having done what we would call super human feats, such as lifting an object they they ordinarily would not be able to lift without help. There might be a thousand reasons why what we are about to attempt might fail, but we grab hold of that one slender thread of possibility, and swing to reach the other side of the chasm that separates us from our goal. We consider the first law of humanity to be our calling in the situation, to show compassion, and that nothing can stand in our way.

We don’t have to be a superhero to show compassion, and love. A simple act of opening a door for a stranger, volunteering at a soup kitchen, taking a weekly shift on a help phone, for the suicidal, lost kids, or women wondering about an unwanted pregnancy. Giving others a hand up, when they have stumbled, knowing that but for one misstep goes us. So how will you show love today?
