Someone shot the Messenger!
You know the old saying, “Don’t shoot the messenger.” Well Microsoft just took a snipers aim at messenger. The writing was on the wall for awhile. The first sign was Microsoft purchasing Skype, followed by Skype integration into IE, the new Skype app in Win 8, and the inclusion into Win 8 phones as a standard app.
Messenger started out in 1999, as MSN Messenger, evolved into Windows Messenger with XP and more recently became Live Messenger. So why kill it now? Because Skype offers IM, SMS and the ability to make phone calls all from one app, on many platforms. Skype can be found on IOs, Android, within Chrome or Firefox, on phones, tablets, and computers. Xbox live will probably follow soon in switching.
Oh not applicable in China as of today.
