My top 10 Open source or free software programs

Every magazine, tech writer will list programs you need. Here are 10 I use, these are free for personal use, and most have a  resonable fee for commercial purposes. As with any list, only download those that you need, yes they are all free, but why clutter your computer with programs you don’t need or use.

1. http://getgreenshot.org/ A free screen shot capture program, that makes it easy to export the pic to where I need it, email, Office program, piccasa, or just as a file. It even captures complete web pages that require scrolling to display all the content.

2. http://www.iespell.com/ A free spell check for Internet Explorer, that has 3 flavors, British, American and Canadian. For anyone else sorry mate. It works with MS office and can share the same dictionary, so all those words I added to my dictionary are here already.

3. http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/ This used to be a XP powertoy, and I liked it so much I didn’t buy the company, but I found it on codeplex.

4. http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/ For those times you just have to share your internet connection with a tablet, smartphone, it will even suport iphones and ipads.

5. http://nopcommerce.codeplex.com/ Why pay $40, $50 or even $100 month for a shopping cart for your website, instead take your partner out for a business lunch, just don’t forget to keep the reciept.

6. http://www.piriform.com/recuva This program just might save you from yourself. If you have ever deleted the wrong file, this will make one will make you smile.

7. http://handbrake.fr/ Works on almost evey possible operating system. A video transcoder that won’t break copy protection.

8. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-live/essentials-home Windows Essentials, Skydrive, Word, Excel, One note all free, all fully compatible with Office.

9. http://youtubefisher.codeplex.com/ I use it to grab those handy how to videos from Youtube. Great for those who want to learn a foriegn language.

10. http://montage.cloudapp.net/gallery A web utility that allows you to visually pull in, information from all over the web, including Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and more.

If there is a free program or service you like, leave a comment, perhpas it will help someone else.
