Teachers who inspired me, expanded
Over the last two weeks I have listed several world figures who have influenced my life. The criteria I choose was that they had to be alive when I was able to understand the lesson. I didn’t include historical figures. Male and female, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, scientist, philosopher statesman, freedom fighter, environmentalist, radical, are but some of the words that could be applied to them. Rather than explain why each one is on the list, I will give you a quote from each. So to speak, I’ll let their words explain why they influenced me. Although I only list one quote per teacher, they are all knowledgeable, articulate speakers, with much more to say than can be summed up in a single quote.
“Every one of us can do something to protect and care for our planet. We will have to live in such a way that a future will be possible for our children and our grandchildren. Our own life has to be the message.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
“The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that could cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism.”
Aung San Suu Kyi
Radical transformation of society requires personal and spiritual change first or at least simultaneously.
People seeking to live spiritually must be concerned with their social and physical environment.”
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi“
We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”
