Teachers who inspired me: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
More widely known as Mahatma Gandhi was a Hindu who became famous for fighting for Hindu and Muslim rights in South Africa. Later using the same nonviolent methods he lead India to its independence from Britain. He was a strong opponent of communalism, or politics based on religion, instead reaching out to all groups. Some of hs more stirring and inspiring quotes were: “An eye for an eye, makes the whole world blind.” Mary Ellen Snodgrass, Encyclopedia of the Literature of Empire(2009) p 316. Also “There are many causes I am prepared to die for, but none I am prepared to kill for.” James Geary, Geary’s Guide to the World’s Great Aphorists(2007) p 87. He inspired many other leaders of movements to embrace nonviolence to achieve their goals, and continues to do so.
