Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Make a new friend today, yourself

  • In order to show understanding, loving and compassionate to others, we need to first show those qualities to ourselves. When we can accept our own flaws, critically evaluate our thoughts and actions, and make adjustments or changes as required, then we are accepting ourselves as we are, while not thinking of this as our permanent state. For if we can accept that we need to make changes in ourselves, then we accept that we are not perfect. If we are not perfect, then we can accept that in others. If we can show compassion to ourselves, then it is easier to show compassion to others. As we treat ourselves so we treat the rest of the world. If we are kind to ourselves, see ourselves with clear sight, and have compassion for what is not perfect, we are more likely to be calm to the rest of the world. We won’t be taking our frustrations out on the first person who annoys us. What we do to our self, we are also doing for others. What we do for others we also do for ourselves. When we are full of anger, for whatever the reason we tell ourselves, we project that anger to the rest of the world. We are seeing the world through a cloud of anger; the world sees us through the same cloud. You may be saying the same thing many others have said, ” Start fresh tomorrow”, or Monday. The Buddha taught us to live in the present, to take action in the present, so start making a friend with yourself this moment. Start just as you are successes and failures, strengths and shortcomings, all the good and all the bad, just accept you as you are. Realize that change will come to us, we can either be proactive, show ourselves love, compassion and understanding, giving us the chance to develop those qualities, or we can continue down the path that we have followed. So show your new friend, just how much compassion you have for them. 🙂
