Merit by Service to others
By doing actions to help others without compensation we can also gain merit. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, shovel the side walks clear of snow, or clean an elderly persons yard, hold the door for the person behind you, allowing merging traffic into your lane instead of racing to be first, and many others are ways of doing this everyday. If we are at a Temple or Wat, we can offer to clean a monks bowl, pour tea for them, do chores at the Temple or Wat. Here it is the motivation that leads to the accruing of merit.
