Hunger versus meals
Growing up I spent parts of many summers on either my grandparents farm, or one summer helping out my aunt and uncle with their dude ranch. For those of you who don’t know what a dude ranch is, see the movie City Slickers. It’s where city people can get a taste of what country life and horse riding is all about. I noticed that when we stopped for breaks here and there, the horse almost always drank water given a chance, but eating was not as frequent. Even following the same path, sometimes they ate at one stop one day, but didn’t the next even when there was plenty of food available. This came to mind because, this morning on the radio a Doctor who specializes in obesity was on the talk show. He was pointing out that for a lot of use we eat when in reality our body wants liquids. this has become worse as we consume more sugar laden foods. His suggestion was to drink 1 or 2 glasses of water about 15 to 30 minutes in advance of a meal. Also not to go more than 3 hours without drinking a glass of water or other beverage. If we mainly drink water, instead of soft drinks we can avoid several hundred empty calories everyday. Also drinking water is a lo easier on the environment than drinking cans of Coke, Pepsi or any other brand.
