Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

How much does happiness cost?

It seems everyday you turn on the television or read the newspaper and there is another product that you must acquire to be happy. Of course all these products have a cost, or as the television ads say, you can own it for 4 monthly payments of only $29.99 on approved credit. The Buddha taught us that happiness comes from within. There is no external object or other person who can make us happy. Happiness is an attitude, that starts within ourselves. People can do or say something that can be cause for us to smile, but that smile is dependent on our attitude. We choose if we are happy or not every second of every day. If we are feeling stressed, over burdened we tend to react poorly to interruptions. Where if we are feeling happy, and at peace that same interruption could cause us to smile or even chuckle or giggle. So happiness is free, all those infomercials, advertisements, and other pitches are not about your happiness, they are about selling you a product that you probably wouldn’t purchase otherwise. Keep looking at those commercials and say “I don’t need it” and soon you will find you have a little more jungle in your pockets. After a while, you will feel less financial pressures too, which helps reduce your stress levels, making you happier even more.
