A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Science is catching up to what we have known for almost 3 millenia

Any Christian who has read the Holy Bible will recognize Genesis 1:26 Then God said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” Merriam-Webster defines dominion as supreme authority. As Christians are taught to be Christ like, they need to consider how their actions affect others. In other words right thought, right speech, right actions. The Jewish faith has dietary laws that Christians no longer follow, even though they were included in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. As Buddhists we are taught not to harm other sentient beings for our sustenance. Modern science tells us that a vegetarian diet is the healthiest for us as long as it is properly balanced. A vegetarian diet that relies on locally produced foods has the lowest environmental foot print.  Here is a Wikipedia article for you to consider: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_vegetarianism Buddha taught us not for environmental reasons to be vegan, but rather that sentient beings are not to be harmed. 2600 years later science gives the same message with different reasoning. As the majority of us now live in urban settings, having even a small window box for herbs and spices can make a difference. Plus the flavor of fresh herbs compared to the dried, packaged and stored, well to me there is no comparison. Buddhists are taught that even the water we place as an offering at our home shrine, should be put to good use afterwards, such as watering household plants.
