A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Chanting improves memory

For those who celebrated Halloween last night with their children or friends I hope your sugar rush is not too bad, or that your sweet tooth is satisfied for a while.  Venerable Master Chin Kung makes a point about the Pure Land School of Buddhism: That we are taught to follow the precepts and chant a Buddha’s name to be born into the Western Pure Land. Just chanting the name alone will not accomplish our goal of birth in the Pure Land in our next life. Once again we are reminded about right thought, right speech and right action being in harmony. When we meditate in the Buddhist tradition we do so in 3 parts. We make three adjustments, firstly to our mind through silent meditation. Secondly we adjust our body through walking meditation.  Finally we make an adjustment to our speech through chanting mediation. At our Saturday morning meditation class we practice these before we listen to the Dharma lecture. On the video I mentioned, Venerable Master Chin Kung gives us an excellent example on religious tolerance as a Buddhist in video one of Treatise on Response and Retribution. He points how as School of Pure Land Buddhist’s we encourage others to be born in the Western Pure Land, we can also encourage Christians to be born again into Heaven.
