Vietnam influenced from 2 directions
As I mentioned earlier Vietnam’s Buddhist path is an amalgamation of the Theravada and Mahayana. Buddhism first arrived in Vietnam with monks from India who arrived on ships travelling the spice route. Monks were often brought along for good fortune. From Vietnam, Buddhism spread north, into southern China. Later as Mahayana became the dominate Buddhism in China, parts of it flowed back southward into Vietnam. Today Buddhism is undergoing a renaissance with the dissolution of communist control.
