The Heart Sutra is also known as the Sutra of Perfect Wisdom, or Perfection Sutra. This sutra is not a teaching to us directly from the Buddha. Rather it is on his behalf by Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattava of Compassion. The Heart Sutra ends with a mantra that we are encouraged to recite “Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha”. The word gate would be more closely pronounced as Gah-tay. This mantra means “Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond. Awake! Wow!” In short it describes the Bodhisattva’s(being dedicated to awakening or obtaining enlightenment) way of going beyond the concept, any boundary or other limits, to full understanding, to enlightenment. It is the awakening of the mind to pure enlightenment, and being completely beyond. The end is the western exclamation of wow, what we say when we have a eureka moment.
