A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Prajnaparamita

Asian cultures regard the Prajnaparamita as “The mother of All Buddhas.” It  contains the knowledge necessary for any being to obtain Buddhahood. The contain the road map that leads to individual enlightenment. The Parjnaparamita leads to attainment or realization of the perfection of wisdom. Professor Edward Conze gave us the definitive translation of these. In 1951 he wrote a book which to this day is still one of the best introductory textbooks on Buddhism. His essay “Buddhism, It’s Essence and Its Development” is still one of the premier books today. Professor Conze was born in Germany, escaped to England and later taught in the USA. He never visited Asia, never formally studied under a Buddhist teacher, never developed the practice of formal meditating, or took refuge in the triple gems. However in his memoirs he wrote “From Early times onwards it has been my conviction that I have come from a higher realm; that my great knowledge of the Mahayana cannot be explained by why I should study in this life, but is based on my memory of what I learnt before; and that I was sent to the Western barbarians so as to soften their hearts by teaching them the Holy Prajnaparamita.” Edward Conze, Memoirs of a Modern Gnostic (Shelbourne, U.K. The Samizdat Publishing Co.) p. 52
