A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Expectations

When you first meet someone, how do you treat them? Do you greet them with open arms, or arms crossed against your chest? Is it with the offer of a handshake, or a bow, or are you putting your fists up ready to fight? The physical ones are easy to see, but how about the thought processes inside of us. Do we expect the person to be honest or assume they are a lair? Unless they are a door to door salesman, or clerk in a store, do you assume they are out to get your money? How about if you are single, and the other person is of the opposite sex, and attractive to you, do you think long term? Do you judge them by the criteria of whether or not they would make a good partner in life, or just if they would be good in bed, for a short fling? It doesn’t matter which path you choose to follow, most religions teach us to treat others the way we would want to be treated. So do you want to be seen as a liar or thief until you prove otherwise, guilty until proven innocent? Do you want someone who well professing long term intentions, is already looking for their next conquest or acquisition?
