Why do I reference different schools?
Some of you may have noticed I have referenced Mahayana and Theravada texts, translations and teachers. I have also used examples of different schools such as Pure Land, Zen or Shinto. As a westerner, I do not have a predisposition to any one school. As most Monks will say they all lead to the same point, so I will reference materials that I understand, or that take the incomprehensible and allow me to at least gain a basic understanding. Once I choose a temple or Wat to attend as my place of worship, I will still look towards other schools for clarification or understanding, well immersing myself into a school of learning. If I move to another locale, where I need to change schools, I will learn from a different perspective, but the goal will still be to achieve enlightenment.
