A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

Four Noble Truths

The Four Noble Truths explain suffering. It’s nature, how it is caused and how we me overcome it. Firstly what does Buddhism mean by suffering? It can be craving something, dissatisfaction, anxiety, stress, loss, physical pain, or other afflictions that cause a loss of happiness. Buddhism does not offer escape from suffering, rather it acknowledges tat we all suffer, and gives us the tools to receive it, accept it, deal with it, and leave it behind. The Buddha taught on this tpic many times during his life, and expanded and clarified it. He compared the four Noble Truths to the footprints of elephants, as all other animal foot prints fit within these four footprints, so do all of his other teachings fit within the Four Noble Truths. From his teaching on “setting the Dharma Wheel in Motion” suffering was a basis for the rest of his teachings.
