A Western Buddhist's Travels

Sightseeing & detours on the path of enlightenment

2 millennium for 1 action

Through right thought, speech and actions will be beneficial not only to ourselves but to our families and all other sentient beings. If we apply right thought to our lives, we will impact not only ourselves, but our family, our friends, neighbours and the entire environment. Consider that coffee you just picked up at your favorite coffee shop. The coffee beans may have come from beans gathered on 3 or 4 continents, then brought to where we live. The cream came from a farm in the local area. The sugar was sourced from perhaps a 1000km away. The paper cup may have been made in China from wood from South America. The plastic lid produced in China was made from petroleum that perhaps was sourced from the Middle East. Now I am not saying to not drink coffee or tea, especially as I myself like something to drink beside water. But if we all use a refillable mug, how many foot prints do we remove from the above purchase. Also consider that less waste to be buried or recycled. The garbage and recyclables are taken to a sorting point then sent to be land filled or recycled. The plastic lid may be recycled to plastic pellets, and then perhaps shipped to China to be returned as another lid or container. So if we think about that morning coffee and how we can respect the environment, by using a refillable mug that is right thought and right action. By encouraging others to do the same, we take more positive action, through right speech. Consider that a piece of Styrofoam from a fast food container may take about 2000 years to fully decompose in a landfill. If Jesus had eaten his last supper from a Styrofoam plate, it could just now be finishing its decomposition.
